Women Walk for Peace Across DMZ Gwyn Kirk

Women Walk for Peace Across DMZ

This is a letter we received from our friend Gwyn Kirk. She is part of an international delegation for peace that will be walking across the DMZ as many people in the United States remember the costs of war.

When we read this letter to Grace, she commented, “Women changing the world.”

Here is the letter and links to follow more of the unfolding story.

Dear friends

I’ll be part of an international delegation who will cross the DMZ in Korea on May 24, International Women’s Day for Disarmament.

You may have seen it in the New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/25/world/asia/activists-say-both-north-korea-and-south-korea-approve-womens-peace-walk.html

or the Guardian

We’ll walk with Korean women, north and south, to draw international attention to the urgent need to end the Korean war by replacing the 1953 ceasefire with a peace treaty;

reunite families long separated by the DMZ; and ensure that women are involved at all levels of the peace-building process.

Some weeks ago North Korea agreed to our project, then after a long silence, South Korea also agreed.

Now we’re waiting for the UN Command that controls the DMZ to work out where we can cross.

There’s been some positive press and also some negative stuff calling us “North Korean sympathizers” and “apologists”.

We put a statement on the website focusing on the need for dialogue and engagement:
